ABOUT The Quilt keepers

The Quilt Keepers is a groundbreaking theatrical piece created in partnership by Vanguard Theater, Montclair State University, and The NJ Play Lab. The story follows two young friends, Tala and Nilo, as they navigate the history of Montclair’s Fourth Ward and the Quilt Keepers of Montclair, NJ.  Together, they discover multi-generational stories about migration, redlining, immigration challenges, and the impact of gentrification on Black and Brown communities. Built on the oral histories of longtime Montclair residents gathered through interviews conducted in the summer of 2024 under the guidance of Vanguard’s Artistic Director, Janeece Freeman Clark, and commissioned playwright, Dania Ramos, this production aims to bring together students, community voices, and arts educators to explore the rich history of Montclair’s 4th Ward.
